MAMAN WOMEN || Julz Donald

Maman was established as a contemporary space for the sophisticated stylish woman. A place where carefully curated fashion sit alongside beautiful objects for your home and lifestyle including art which has become a significant part of the Maman story.  At the top of the art game is Julz Donald, a multi-media artist who creates large format resin artworks here in New Zealand.  Our founders Kate and Emma have both long been lovers of art and a chance meeting at school pick up one day led them to Julz.  Over the years the three of them have forged a friendship that has become a mutual support of each other’s family, passions and work, leading them to successfully partner and collaborate.

Julz is self-taught and like all of us starting out in business, she began small by making earrings for her friends and family.  Julz had always loved creating; played the cello throughout school years, and enjoying the art direction side of her early career in advertising and graphic design.  Growing up in Tasmania, it wasn’t until Julz had her kids (she is the proud mum of three gorgeous girls) that she moved to New Zealand and began to explore her artistry.  She now loves creating large-scale resin pieces.  “I love how ethereal resin is, how it flows and how it has a wild and unpredictable element which can’t always be controlled.”  Often inspired by nature and the colour, vitality and atmosphere of her travels, her pieces are striking yet whimsical due to the multiple layers of acrylic, gold foil and collage materials which subtly appear beneath the resin layers.

Our Maman Women team met Julz at her Remuera Studio and just like her artwork, she makes you feel welcome with an ease that makes you believe you have known her a lifetime.   Her studio is a hive of activity with stunning works in progress and finished pieces ready to find their new homes sitting proud on the walls.  You can feel the inspiration in her art; the places she has seen in her earlier life.  From exciting, bustling cities to tranquil, dreamy rainforests, it is all there in the layers of resin.  It gives us such joy to share Julz’s story and work with you.  We are so proud to have her artworks on the walls of Maman and to give our community the avenues to purchase one of her pieces for themselves.

A day in the life of Julz looks like:
After dropping the girls at school I'll take our puppy for a walk before heading into my studio. After 6 months of having my three girls at home, it's been great having them back into the school routine, and for me to get back into my art. Before long it's time to collect them and ferry them to all their various after-school activities and then head home to make dinner.

My family.

What is the most precious thing in your wardrobe:
A special silver necklace I bought myself when my first daughter was born.

Most coveted fashion item at Maman right now:
I've been eyeing up a gorgeous blouse from Leon + Harper!

What's the biggest fashion mistake you've ever made:
Wearing running shoes and jeans whilst on holiday in Europe in my early 20s. Suitcase space was at a premium... but the decision still haunts me. There's a big difference between fashion trainers and running shoes... Philippe Model sneakers remain the gold standard!

What are you doing for the rest of the day:
Trying NOT to eat the leftover Plum Torte.

Current song on rotate:
Anything from the 80s or Ed Sheeran.

Are you a 'wish list' or and 'add to cart' kind of girl:
'Add to cart' (...but then sometimes an 'abandoned cart' kind of girl).

Last picture you took on your phone:
My most recent photo is of my friend making her first bowl at our pottery class the other night. We were SO proud of ourselves!!

Best compliment you have ever received:
When asked to be a godmother.

Who would you most like to be stuck in an elevator with:
Jonathan from Queer Eye.

Favourite quote or saying:
'We can do hard things'. Thank you Glenn Doyle! It's a wonderful reminder to my kids when they're struggling (and to myself sometimes too).

What's the best advice your Mum has given you:
My dutch mother raised us (her four babies) in developing countries before moving to Australia. She's a living example of perseverance and endurance in the face of hardship, and always wanted us to do our best and to think of others.

Once the borders open what is your first Holiday Destination:
Tasmania to see my family. It's where I'm from and I think it will always be my favourite place in the world.

Last words:
A huge thank you to Em and Kate for including me in the series - what an amazing community you've created through Maman! The way you continue to look for ways to support everyone around you, and the beautiful way you both share your energy and light is really special to watch. Thank you xxx.
